“Kaaka Muttai (Crows Egg)” Tamil Movie Review:

Kaaka Muttai
“Kaaka Muttai” is a movie that had been produced jointly by actor Dhanush and director Vetrimaran through Wunderbar Films and Grass Root Film company. The movie has been directed by debutant Manikandan who had earlier worked with Vetrimaran as an assistant director. Though the film had been completed in the mid 2014, the director had decided to send the movie for festivals and later release the movie.

His thoughts became true, where the movie had participated in the 39th Toronto International Film Festival and the movie had its world premiere on September 5th 2014. Later the movie was screened in Rome Film Festival, Dubai International Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, Gold Coast Film Festival and many. Later in the 2015, the movie bagged two awards one for “The Best Children Film” and the other for “Best Child Artiste”.

Movie’s participation in many film festivals and bagging many awards including National Award from the Indian Government, created more expectations among the audiences.

The movie is based on a life of two brothers (Ramesh and Vignesh) niknamed Chinna Kaaka Muttai(Small Crows Egg) and Periya Kaaka Muttai(Big Crows Egg) during their childhood. The movie travels in a slum background of North Chennai. Father of the kids is shown being a prisoner and their mother takes care of the kids. Due to financial constrain the education of the kids are been dropped and they both are engaged in collecting coal that has been spilled on the sides of the railway track.. The coal being collected by Chinna Kaaka Muttai and Periya Kaaka Muttai helps to fill the daily bread of their whole family.

Flicking the crows egg from its nest is the hobby of these two Kaaka Muttai’s. The plan on how they make the crow come out of the nest keeps the audience laugh and think about their idea. One day they happen to see actor Simbu inaugurating a Pizza Shop. They both watch Simbu eating Pizza and get addicted to it and plan to eat. They both try to make their earnings more to buy a Pizza. Though they have made themselves financially convenient to buy a Pizza, they are being stopped by the watchman looking at their costume. They again keep themselves engaged to earn more buy their dress.

It would surely make the audience laugh when they visually see on how they buy the new dress. Later, both the Kaaka Muttai’s visit the Pizza shop and Periya Kaaka Muttai is been manhandled by the manager of the Pizza shop. This incident is being captured on a cellphone by a child from the slum they reside. Comedian Ramesh Thilak who sees the video footage, takes away the cellphone from the kid and goes out for a negotiation with the owner of the Pizza shop(Baby Antony) and ends in a comedy tragedy which gives the comedian a failure in his negotiation. In the meantime, the video is been floated in all news channels and these two Kaaka Muttai’s become familiar. But the beauty is that both the Kaaka Muttai’s are not aware about all the happenings. Negotiation between the police and the owner of the Pizza shop, negotiation between the MLA and the owner of the Pizza shop carries out and the movie explains how an innocent victims issue becomes a commercial gain for politicians, police and other third persons.

You have to watch the film to know the climax whether the two Kaaka Muttai’s ate Pizza!

Manikandan has nicely written the script and directed the movie with ease without leaving any room for negative comments. Kids from north Chennai Vignesh and Ramesh have performed naturally. Excellent performance by young heroine Ishwarya Rajesh who has done the character of a mother of two kids. Audience would really feel why Ishwarya Rajesh was not awarded with the National Award. Ishwarya Rajesh should have been awarded along with the other national awards the movie had bagged. This movie would sure shot be a stepping stone for Ishwarya Rajesh for her next level of acting. Three songs have been penned by Na.Muthukumar and one song has been penned by La.Rajkumar. Songs keep travelling with the story. G.V.Prakash has scored the music perfectly to match the sequence of the movie. Cinematography has been handled by the director Manikandan. Editor T.E.Kishore, who recently passed away has done justice to his work making the movie crisper.

Overall the whole crew in the movie has to be appreciated. In 2015 many films had been released and few in single digit succeeded and others failed with utter loss. Most of the films that were failure were said to have been made in big budgets. Hope those directors and actors watch the movie and understand that movies made with low budget or high budget not matters and it is only story and the making that matters.

Movie is getting released on 5th June 2015. “Kaaka Muttai” movie can be watched by all sectors of audiences and everyone would surely appreciate the team. Kudos to the whole crew of “Kaaka Muttai”.
