BJP leader H. Raja has strongly criticized Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) President and actor Vijay for opposing the Central Government’s proposed Trilingual Education Policy.
In a statement shared on his social media platform ‘X’, H. Raja questioned Vijay’s stance, pointing out what he called a contradiction between the actor’s public statements and personal choices regarding education.
Raja referenced a song from Vijay’s 2009 Tamil film Vettaikaran, in which the actor performed alongside his son Jason Sanjay. The lyrics of the song advocated for improving Tamil Nadu’s education system while promoting learning in the Tamil language. However, Raja noted that despite singing about studying in one’s mother tongue, Vijay had enrolled his son in the American International School in Chennai, which follows a trilingual curriculum.
“The new National Education Policy (NEP) aims to provide quality education, similar to institutions like the American International School, to all children in Tamil Nadu,” Raja stated. “It is surprising that Vijay, who has ensured a trilingual education for his own son, is now opposing the Central Government’s efforts to offer the same standard to students across the state.”
Vijay, who recently launched his political party TVK, has been vocal about educational policies, advocating for Tamil-medium education and opposing what he sees as impositions by the Union Government. His stance against the Trilingual Education Policy aligns with concerns raised by other Tamil political leaders about the possible dilution of Tamil’s prominence in the curriculum.
Raja’s remarks come amid growing political debates over the NEP, with education becoming a key issue in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Neither Vijay nor TVK has responded to Raja’s statement at the time of reporting.
