The general elections for Tamil Nadu Assembly has been scheduled for 6th April 2021. Most of the Political parties are said to be on a full-fledged canvassing through procession and public meetings. Few candidates keep walking into houses of the voters canvassing for votes.
Most of the political parties make door to door visit only to few houses and do canvassing through road rally. In this situation, we happened to notice a person while passing on at Mogappair. It was a young man around 45 years old dressed in White & White making door to door canvassing. We just followed him and his activities. He was just ringing or knocking the gates or doors of every house and was introducing himself as an Independent candidate of Maduravoyal constituency and was seeking their votes. He was carrying a bunch of papers in his hands and were confused whether it was election propaganda notice papers.
We later understood from him that those papers were not election propaganda notice papers and were documents about his social activities. He said that he is a Social Activist and a RTI Activist. He said that he had raised many issues in regard to social activities.
While talking to him and looking out the documents we found out that he had initiated action to demolish the compound wall of an apartment, where the builder had encroached the road in Mogappair Eri Scheme to construct the wall. A group of people in Ayyappakkam who had migrated years ago from different places where suffering without Ration Cards and Voter Identification Cards. Selvakumar has initiated and had approached the government departments and have availed them with Ration Cards and Voter ID cards.
Looking at the papers carried by Selvakumar, it shows his involvement in various other social issues he had taken in his hands.
Selvakumar is contesting as an Independent candidate with “Match Box” symbol against powerful AIADMK candidate Benjamin who has serving as a Minister for the past ten years. The other opponents are Karapakkam Ganapathy of DMK who is also said to have strong hold in the constituency, Ganeshkumar of Naam Tamilar Katchi, Padmapriya of Makkal Needhi Maiam, Lucky Murugan of AMMK and few other independent candidates.
Selvakumar while talking to us said that he was not sure whether he would win in the race. But his initiative to contest in this election was to make the voters understand what a public representative should do to serve their people and not mere visiting the constituency once in five years to canvas during the election.
