Transformation of Thugs as farmers! – Sulthan Review

Sulthan is a 2021 action film directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan and produced by S.R. Prakash Babu and S.R. Prabhu. The movie casts Karthi, Rashmika Mandanna, Lal, Prince (A) Arjai, KGF Ram and Nawab Shah in the lead roles.

Four villagers come to meet Sulthan’s father(Napoleon) at his house and request him with a help to save their villagers and their agriculture from Jaiseelan(Ramachandra Raju) who keeps them disturbing. Nepoleon accepts their request and promises to help them and says they don’t want anything in exchange except a hand full of grains harvested in those fields.

The story revolves around Sulthan(Karthi) who returns from Bombay to his hometown. On a sudden attack by some miscreants at Nepoleon’s house, Nepoleon and few other get injured with gunshots and Nepoleon dies on the next day.

Karthi is now left with a bunch of morons said to be his brothers, who are secretly planning to fulfil his father’s last promise, without consulting Sultan. In the meantime Karthi plans to refine those morons. During this mission, Karthi falls in love with Rukmani(Rashmika Mandanna) who refuses him.

Answers to “Was Karthi able to refine his brothers? Did Rukmani accept Sulthan’s love proposal?” moves the movie to the climax of the story.

Few scenes in the movie recollects us with yesteryear movies Devar Magan and few other. Karthi has done his best to satisfy his fans. Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan assuming as making a mass movie for Karthi, has penned dialogues portraying scenes which look artificial. These kinds of artificial scenes would surely create a setback in Karthi’s career. Director’s star cast with established artistes for even small characters is said to be a drawback. Yogi Babu’s appearance on screen with his comical dialogues keeps the audience engaged. Chemistry between Karthi and Yogi Babu has worked well. Rashmika Mandanna looks pleasing and attractive even with a dull make-up. Ramachandra Raju who plays as one of the villains in the movie has done justice to his acting. Nothing special to be mentioned about Nepoleon, Lal and Nawab Shah characters in the movie. Ponvannan and Mayilsamy have done justice to their acting.

Though it’s unimaginable that thugs could be refined and made as farmers, the scene such portrayed in the movie keeps us reminding about the need of agriculture and lack of agricultural labourers in our country.

Vivek Mervin’s music for the songs and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Background Music have rendered a big support for the movie. Sathyan Sooriyan’s cinematography is said to be the backbone in holding the movie move forward. Though Ruben has done his best in Editing, director’s poor screenplay has missed the editor’s crispy cut.

Karthi’s “Sulthan” is a movie that can be watched along with family.
